What is Microsoft Intune?
Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based endpoint management solution that allows our organization to securely manage and control mobile devices, desktops, and applications. It enables us to enforce device compliance, distribute apps, protect company data, and monitor device health. It is set to be deployed CERN wide for all Centrally managed Windows Machines, over the currently used solution, CMF.
This documentation is constantly evolving as the Intune and MCM deployment across CERN are progressing. For any questions that may not be covered yet, please contact the Windows Desktops Service
What has changed from CMF?
CMF is CERN's proprietary endpoint management tool, which is currently (As of April 2025) available to all Centrally Managed Windows Machines. This is currently being phased out in favour of Microsoft Intune. Here are some general changes that one can expect with the new tool, and some changes in relation to how application provisioning is handled in Intune:
Feature/page in CMF | Feature/page in Intune |
---|---|
Add/Remove Programs page | Self-service done via the Company Portal app |
Description of changes:
Previously, you would access the CMF device and status page via the icon on the taskbar.
This would bring you to the Applications page, where you can add and remove CMF "Packages" i.e. Apps.
And for updates, you would utilise the "Pending Actions option", to have a look at incoming installations, updates and removals.
On Intune, the apps available for centrally managed PC's will be present in the Company Portal.
On opening the company portal, you will be able to see centrally provisioned apps, similar to the Microsoft Store.
Updates and Removals can be handled for these applications accordingly, through the updates menues, as well as the App Details Pages.
