What is Planner and Project Plan 3?

"Planner and Project Plan 3" is a subscription service from Microsoft that combines the features of Microsoft Planner with Project Online, offering a comprehensive project management solution.

It provides tools for planning, managing, and tracking complex projects, including task assignment, milestone setting, dependency management, and progress tracking.

It also includes features like resource management and the ability to publish projects to the cloud.

Key features of Planner and Project Plan 3

  • It offers more comprehensive features for managing projects, including resource allocation, budgeting, cost control, and risk management.
  • Project Online Access: it includes access to the Project Online platform for online project management and collaboration.
  • Project Desktop Client: it provides access to the desktop version of Project, offering more advanced planning and scheduling capabilities.
  • Additional Features: it includes features like baselines, critical path analysis, roadmaps, and resource request capabilities.

Who is its target audience?

The primary target audience for Microsoft Project Plan 3 includes:

  • project managers, portfolio managers, and team leads who need robust project management capabilities, including scheduling, resource management, and collaboration features, within a cloud-based environment.
  • It also extends to team members who need to collaborate on projects and track their tasks.

Request Planner and Project Plan 3 License

Before requesting a Project Plan 3 license:

  • Check if Planner for the web is sufficient for you and your team.
  • Evaluate whether you need Planner and Project Plan 3 to do your work.
  • Each member of the team who needs a license should request it individually.

Planner and Project Plan 3 requires a license available on request.

  • A Planner and Project Plan 3 license is required to access the premium features of both tools.
  • Planner and Project for the web are now integrated, with Planner becoming the user interface for many Project features.

How to access Project Plan 3?

Accessing via Project for the web

Warning

  • Project for the web will soon become Microsoft Planner for the web.
  • You can continue using most of the Project for the web capabilities in the new Planner.

Installing Project for Desktop

The desktop version of Project Plan 3 is only available on Windows platforms.

MS Project (Desktop), which is included in Project Plan 3 subscription, is available through CMF.

  • Right-click CERN CMF icon, then Add/Remove CMF Packages and select MS Project for Office 365.

If you can't install it from CMF (i.e. the computer is outside the CERN Network):

  1. Open Microsoft 365 home page and Sign in with your work or school account.
  2. Open the App launcher, and look for a button or link labeled "Install software" or go to "Apps & devices".
  3. Find Project in the list of available apps and click "Install".

If Project is not listed:

  • It's possible that your Microsoft 365 subscription doesn't include Project. You may need to request a license.
  • To verify your subscription, you can go to your account page (usually found by clicking on your profile picture) and check your subscriptions.

Is Mac users can subscribe to Project Plan 3?

Yes, Mac users can subscribe to Project Plan 3.

It's important to note that the MS Project desktop application itself isn't natively available for macOS.

To use Project Plan 3 on a Mac, users need to use Parallels (or another Windows emulator) to run a VM Windows environment where they can install MS Project desktop. Alternatively, Mac users can use the web-based Project Online and Project for the Web or open a CERN Terminal server session.
